Future changes to Land Registry and its data

Changes are afoot at the Land Registry, not just in terms of how the house price data is reported, but also whether the Land Registry moves to the private sector.

Land Registry house price data
Currently, Land Registry produce a monthly House Price Index, however, there will become a 'single official house price index' incorporating the Land Registry, Land and Property Services, Northern Ireland, Office for National Statistics and Registers of Scotland.

HPI publication date changes
The publication dates for the new HPI have just been confirmed for the next few months, with April 2016's data being released on 14th June (see future release dates here).

Sale of Land Registry to the private sector
The Government's consultation, which closes on 26th May 2016, sets out options to move Land Registry operations into the private sector. The preferred model being proposed is a privatisation of Land Registry consisting of a contract between government and a private operator, with all the core functions transferred out of the public sector, but with key safeguards for Land Registry customers and government being maintained.
