Garden Outdoor Living

Fancy investing in a bit of garden outdoor living with our lovely sunshine?

Having seen loads of programmes from the States, where they seem to spend most of their time in the lovely outdoors, I thought during this time it would be fun to find out about all the things you could buy to create a ‘room outside’!

Having done my research, it is true, the Americans are the experts when it comes to outdoor living! A great article from Designs Theory Interiors which shows you can effectively create a new home outdoors with a gas BBQ, tables and chairs, all weather TV and speakers and even outdoor rugs, artwork and billiard tables! Even if it is cold you can get outdoor heaters, although personally we bought a fire pit (all to do with the husband ‘man makes fire’ thing they love!) and that gives off a tremendous amount of heat allowing you to stay warm even when the sun goes down.

Creating a ‘room outdoors’ needs to be done with a great deal of thought and care. Here’s my top 10 tips for creating outdoor space:-

  1. Find out where the sun starts and ends during the day
  2. Work out what you want to do outside: sit all day or just have meals outside, or a combination of the two?
  3. Some like it hot and sunny, others like a bit of shade, so make sure you accommodate for both
  4. If you have a patio, make sure you can clean it and keep it free of weeds
  5. If you have decking, treat it every year or so to keep it free of moss or it becomes very slippy and will quickly rot!
  6. Ensure any cooking equipment is well away from chairs/tables so you don’t get ‘smoked out’ and prevent smoke sinking into the furniture (especially any soft furnishings)
  7. Don’t forget how much it rains here and now we have frost/snow so you’ll need somewhere to store all items, or you’ll need effective covers
  8. Ensure you buy furniture that will last. Get guarantees, wood is lovely, but will require regular treatment to keep it weather proof
  9. Beware of candles and fire pits if there are kids around, try to have them ‘safely’ placed out of their reach
  10. Have something that keeps away flies such as scented candles or fly traps so they don’t ruin your meals!

Outdoor living can be fun, but you do have to put a bit of time and effort into thinking about the best place to ‘live and eat’ outside and once you have created it, don’t forget you’ll need to do a bit of work each year to keep it looking great!
